What Are Sound Control Mats?

-

Sound control mats help reduce or absorb noise vibrations in a building, creating a quieter environment. After buying quality noise control mats, a licensed applicator can install them effectively. Here is some information about sound mats:

Application

Sound-dampening mats are versatile making them ideal for use in commercial, industrial, and residential spaces. They can be installed on floors, ceilings, doors, and walls for soundproofing benefits. The mats are commonly used in recording studios, home theaters, office spaces, apartments, condos, and hotels. Sound control mats can be added over tile, laminate, or hardwood floors. They are also compatible with radiant heating systems, concrete subfloors, and floating subfloors.

Sound control mats find applications in schools, colleges, and universities to improve acoustic performance in classrooms, lecture halls, and libraries. They may help create better learning environments by reducing noise distractions and improving speech clarity. Mats can also be used in sports halls, gyms, and fitness centers to prevent noise transmission to nearby areas.

Material Composition

A sound mat is made of different materials such as recycled or synthetic rubber which feature impact and vibration absorption properties. Foam-based mats are made from materials like polyurethane foam or polyethylene foam and help lower airborne noise transmission. Mats made from rubber or foam have thermal insulation elements that can minimize heat exchange, leading to thermal efficiency. Cork mats are natural and eco-friendly options for sound control. They are also resistant to moisture and can provide thermal insulation perks.

Some mats are made from composite materials that combine different layers or components to achieve specific noise control functionalities. A composite mat consists of a layer of rubber for impact resistance and a layer of foam for sound absorption. You can choose mass-loaded vinyl (MVL) mats consisting of a layer of vinyl loaded with heavy minerals or fillers. MVL mats are thick, making them ideal for blocking sound transmission in buildings.

STC and IIC Rating

Acoustic mats have different sound transmission class (STC) and impact insulation class (IIC) ratings that influence their effectiveness. The STC rating is the mat’s ability to reduce airborne sound transmission. Sound-dampening mats with higher STC ratings offer better soundproofing performance.

The IIC rating is a mat’s ability to reduce impact noise transmission, such as footsteps, dropped objects, or furniture movements. Choose mats with a higher IIC rating as they can minimize impact noise transmission and provide a quieter environment. The IIC and STC rating requirements can vary based on local building codes, regulations, and the desired level of soundproofing in a particular space. You can work with reputable vendors or acoustic consultants to know the ratings that suit your building.

Compression Resistance

When choosing sound isolation mats, check the compression resistance. This feature enables the mat to withstand pressure or weight without distorting the shape or losing its soundproofing properties. When subjected to foot traffic or heavy loads, the mats should maintain their thickness and integrity.

Mats with low compression resistance lose their effectiveness and fail to provide the desired noise reduction. The compression resistance of anti-noise mats is indicated by pounds per square inch (psi) or kilopascals (kPa). The higher the psi or kPa value, the greater the compression resistance of the mat.

Buy a High-quality Sound Mat

Choose to effortlessly install sound isolation mats in your home or building. Cut them into the desired sizes or shapes and apply them directly to surfaces using adhesives or mechanical fasteners. Some mats are available as rolls or sheets, making them suitable for renovating existing subfloors. Other sound reduction mats have moisture-resistance properties to help protect your floors from mold and mildew. Invest in quality sound control mats that last for an extended period of time and maintain their appearance.
